Nordosten und Sprengisandur im August

in 2008 I started my tour from Hvolsvollur heading north on the F210. Then we did continue heading north through Reykjadalir coming out on the F225 in Kringla, more or less.

This piece is very nice and with not so many cars. In Reykjadalir the road goes up, some parts are very very steep. For the worst pieces we had to push one bike in 2!!! then go down and do the same for the other bike. We were riding a MTB and used a BOB trailer. At that moment we were fully loaded with food for one week, so overall no less than 30 Kg of food and equipment. Water is not a problem, you can get it in the Eystri Ranga and later on the Markarfljot (you have to ford it but when the river is still little ) and in an other couple of places. Halfway on the road in Reykjadalir you get to the crossroad that goes to Hrafntinnusker. Landscapes in Reykjadalir are extraordinary! If the weather is good the view from the top (Pokaryggur?) is incredible. Then you go directly down to Kringla and the F225 junction here the road goes directly down, check your brakes before to start the descent! I would not recommend doing this part in the contrary direction!

Overall I really liked that part, not so many people and beautifull landscapes.

Ich denke ich werde dann auch in Hvolsvöllur starten und dann am Laufafell nordöstlich durchs Reykjadalir nach Landmannahellir radeln oder schieben^^. Kann man am Campingplatz in Landmannalaugar nochmal die nötigsten Lebensmittel nachtanken für die Sprengisandur oder besser gleich komplett in Selfoss/Hvolsvöllur?

Die Markarflöt wäre allerdings meine erste Furt. Machbar?

wo genau liegt der Laufavatn? Auf meiner Ferdakort und GPS ist da nur ein zweiteiliger See ohne Beschriftung zu dem ein Track südlich an der Laufafell Kreuzung führt. Meinst Du den?

PS: The black and white pictures in your gallery are very nice! Possibly I shoud do this on my pictures from last year too hehe.

Paket mit max 6kg schicken und mit Inhaltsliste versehen! Die Pakete liegen dann evtl ein paar Tage am Zoll. Aber das siehst du auf der Tracksite des Pakets. In dem Fall einfach dann kurz bei Zoll anrufen.

Zum Laufavatn selbst geht ein kleiner Track direkt zum See

Von Hovosllfölli könntest Du Dir den Weg über den Vatnadalsfall zur F210 überlegen! Ist wesentlich schöner als über die 264 und Du hast binnen 1er Stunde Hochlandfeeling unter den Reifen

Hovollsvollur - Richtung Fljotsdalur auf der 261 - nach 9 km in den Norden nach Keldur

Wenn Du nicht schon bereits aufgerüstet hast würde ich für diese Strecken bzw Sprengisandur unbedingt einen 2,25 er Reifen verwenden und mit wenig Luft fahren! ist wesentlich besser als der 2,10er. Hat viel mehr Traktion gemütlicher zu fahren und der versinkt dir in tieferen Passagen nicht gleich am Vorderrad (zB Schwalbe Nobby Nick Snake Skin mit Flankenschutz)

Also ich habe mir letzte Woche einen neuen Satz 2,10 Smart Sam gekauft, mit denen bin ich letztes Jahr sehr gut gefahren. Als Ersatzmantel nehme ich meinen 2,4er Conti Mountain King mit. Damit dürfte ich schon gut gerüstet sein.

Da ich mir Extra für die Herdurbreid besteigung noch ein paar Wanderstiefel gekauft habe würde ich die am liebsten gleich auch mit einem extra Paket zum Myvatn schicken. Was kostet so ein 6kg Paket (warum nicht mehr?) nach Island und darf man da auch Salami und andere "verderbliche" Lebensmittel von D aus schicken? Wie lang dauert der Versand in etwa? Lagern die Empfängerhütten das auch mal eine Woche zur Überbrückung?

in our trip we started with the bus from Reykjavik in the morning to Hvolsvollur then we started riding. We got in Akureyri in 8 days including the first with the bus. Our average daily trip was something like 50 Km, maybe not so many but it's an holiday at the end and not a race!!!! Only the last day, from Laugafell to Akureyri, we did 90 Km but just because the road was going down, the wind was pushing and once you get out of the highlands... there are no nice spots where to stop!

Routhly our road: F210, Reykjadalir, F225, F208, F26, F752, F821, 821. We had a stromy day at the beginning that forced us to push the bikes all day ("only" 30 Km) because of the strong wind and to set the camp2 on the river of Markarfljot on the F210 (a little south of the 87 of the map showed by Andi). To be honest this little detour proved to be really nice. The lavafield and the lake are very nice and also the Laufafell viewed from the south is very nice.

Nice the idea of Andi to go to Vatnadalsfall. We did consider it but at the end we decided not to do it because you have to go up and then down and we were considering the heavy load on the BOB... While considering the starting point for us a better choice would have been to start in Hella (shorter time and cheaper ticket on the bus ) and getting to Keldur on the 264...

For the food we had with us food for 7 days and we did send a packet ( 15 Kg !!! ) to Nyidalur from the BSI in Reykjavik in day1 for the rest of the trip. It's incredible how much food you need if you don't want to starve!!!! For the food we decided to buy all the possible in Italy and the last pieces in Reykjavik. So we had no need to stop for buying food.

River crossings on the F210 and Reykjadalir are "normal", let's say to the knees. The Markarfljot:

When do the stores open at morning in Reykjavik? The Bus starts at 08:00 AM at BSI and I have to buy the foods for the package before this time... Does I need to bring a carton with me or can I buy one at the post office in the BSI centre?

Der BSÍ hat ja in dem Sinne keinen Postschalter. Du musst dort Dein fertig gepacktes "Päckchen" abgeben. Bei mir war das mal schlicht eine Plastiktüte mit Gewebeband umwickelt.

Es gibt Läden (10 to 11), die 24 Stunden auf haben (z.B. beim Campingplatz). Es wird aber teuer, viele Lebensmittel dort zu kaufen, die Auswahl ist auch recht begrenzt.
Auch ein größerer Hagkaup (Skeifan - http://www.hagkaup.is/opnunartimi/) hat anscheinend 24 Stunden auf.
Ansonsten machen Lebensmittelgeschäfte eher spät auf, um 10, manchmal auch erst um 12.

Ok, dann werde ich mir einen zweiten Gewebesack mitbringen in dem ich die Vorräte versende und versuche soviel wie möglich Lebensmittel aus Deutschland mitzubringen. Das Paket sollte dann besser auch gleich nach Nyidalur.

In dem Thread über das Versenden von Paketen ab dem BSI steht ja das die garkeine Pakete mehr annehmen, wie sieht es da aktuell aus?

Hallo,

Ich hab gemeint ein Paket per Post von D zu nach Hrauneyjar zu schicken weil das eine Postadresse ist. Nach Nydalur geht das nicht!

Damit musst Du das ganze nicht im Flugzeug mitnehmen und dann trotzdem noch durch den Zoll damit, zum BSI schleppen etc.

Ich schicke in einem Abstand von 2 Wochen jeweils ein Paket von 6 kg. Da Du ja nur 3 kg Lebensmittel Zollfrei einführen darfst sollte da auch nicht mehr an Lebensmitteln (zumindest auf der Packliste stehend) drin sein. Bei 6kg ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit sehr gering dass sie das Paket auf machen und werden es gleich weiter schicken. Darüber schätze ich wird es wahrscheinlich am Zoll liegen bleiben und Du wirst Dich dann extra noch einmal per Mail und Telefon darum kümmern müssen damit das ankommt.

Wenn Du Adda in einem Mail informierst dass da ein Paket ankommt und wann Du es abholen kommst, kein Problem. Vorher noch ein check per Telefon ob das alles da ist, perfekt.

Salami und solche frischen Sachen kannst vergessen, gibt per Post sicher Probleme! Trekking Nahrung, Schokolade, Trockenbrot, Reservebatterien, Bremsklötze etc. hat gut funktioniert

Der Anstieg über den Vatnadalsfjall ist flach. On the further Track you often have to go up and down but you are right i never would do that with a BOB

Ist es denn die einzige Möglichkeit das Paket vom BSI nach Nyidalur zu schicken oder wäre es auch von Hvolsvöllur aus Möglich? Wenn ich es z.B. an einer Haltestelle wie der N1 in Selfoss abgebe?

Nyidalur wäre perfekt weil ich dann nicht den Umweg über Akureyri machen müsste, sondern gleich über die Gaesavatnaleid rüber zur Askja, Kverkfjöll und Herdurbreid.
