The Icelandic government has spent decades protecting its glaciers, pools, ponds, lakes, marshes and permafrost mounds in the Thjorsarver Wetlands, part of the central highlands, which constitute some 40 percent of the entire country, mostly in the interior. But last year, the government announced plans to revoke those protections, allowing for the construction of hydropower plants (instead of glaciers and free-flowing rivers, imagine man-made reservoirs, dams, paved roads and power lines). “If they get into this area, there will be no way to stop them from destroying the wetlands completely,” said Arni Finnsson, the chairman of the Iceland Nature Conservation Association. Leider stimmt es. Die isländische Regierung hat reichlich unentspannt auf diesen Bericht reagiert...

Ich steuere hier ein paar Bilder von der Tour 2012 bei. Die Thjorsarver ist als Nationalpark ausgewiesen und ist ein ganz eimaliges Gebiet um die Zuflüsse zur Thjorsa. Touristisch ist das Gebiet halt nix wert sag ich einmal weil man da einfach nur sehr schwer hinkommt

die Meldung ist zwar schon eine Woche alt aber trotzdem bemerkenswert:

Die wichtigsten Zeilen sind diese hier (UST ist das islaendische Umweltamt, der Regierungswechsel fand im April 2012 statt, der Haushaltsplan stand jedoch schon):
"Iceland's park rangers worked 205 weeks in 2012. In 2013, thanks to increased funding to UST, those weeks increased 232. This year, however, their work weeks will be reduced to only 125."
Das ist verstaendlich. Schliesslich sind die Touristenzahlen von 2012 bis 2014 stetig gewachsen. Offensichtlich braucht man keine Ranger. Die zahlenden Touristen kommen auch wenn alles kaputt und zerstoert ist.

"At Hveravellir and Þjórsá, where park rangers worked 10 weeks last year, there will be no park rangers at all."
Dies ist ebenfalls verstaendlich. Hveravellir war schon lange auf der roten Liste und ist offensichtlich aufgegeben worden - was soll man da noch schuetzen?

Und der grosse Gletscherfluss Þjórsá soll ja sowieso in eine Kraftwerkslandschaft umgewandelt werden. Wieso noch in den Schutz derselben investieren?

Man kann dieser Regierung nur gratulieren wie sie es versteht Island den kommenden Generationen zu erhalten.
