Sumarkveðjan - Sommergrüße

Beitrag von Dieter » Mi 19. Apr 2006, 16:33

Ich habe heute per E-Mail einen Gruß zum "Ersten Sommertag" (18. April) von Philip Vogler aus Egilstadir erhalten:
Greetings and best wishes on what Icelanders celebrate as the First Day of Summer!

A special tradition in Iceland is to celebrate the first Thursday after 18 April as the First Day of Summer. Everyone realises that there can be blizzards after that day, throughout May and even sometimes into June, but lots of springtime birds have returned by the First Day of Summer and at least in most years there are plenty of signs of spring by then. Anyway, the Icelandic summer is so wonderful that there is every reason to celebrate it officially as a holiday!

For the first time, our company has had a cartoon produced to honour the First Day of Summer. Three residents of East Iceland have contributed, with Hrönn Jónsdóttir, Djúpivogur, composing a poem; Charles Ross, Eiðar, composing the music and directing the instrumentalists; and Guðjón Bragi Stefánsson making the film. In the cartoon, the Icelandic poem also appears in a literal translation to English and German.

Our goal is for everyone to enjoy this light-hearted work of art as they commemorate the tradition of Iceland's First Day of Summer. You can see the cartoon by clicking on:
