it seems 2012 will see me back in Iceland! I have a nice plan to ride my bike from Egilsstadir to Landmannalaugar passing from Dreki and many other beautiful places.
I am planning to send a packet with some food to Dreki hut (Askja). I heard there has been problems in sending packets so I would like to have fresh info, maybe someone who did it last summer...
Is it possible to send the packet from Egilsstadir (maybe from the bus station at the camping site)?
And from Reykjavik? Akureyri?
I did try to send a mail to the camping in Egilsstadir but I had no answer...
I am just starting to set up the logistic and this info is important in order to book the airplane.
Thanks,
Ale
p.s. I plan to be there in the last 2 weeks of July
Hi Ale,
the bus driver of the bus going from Egilsstadir to Akureyri should be able to hand over the box to the bus going to Dreki. Make sure to write your name, mobile number and approx. date of arrival at Dreki on the box. Have a bus plan at hand, just in case he/she doesn´t understand you or doesn´t know which bus you are talking about or which hut. You also pay the bus driver in Egilsstadir.
I usually also stick a small envelope with a short message for the wardens/rangers at the box with a short description of who I am and which way I come.
If you start from BSI in RVK, go to the Sterna counter. They might also not know which bus/hut you are talking about, be persistent! When we sent our box from BSI to Dreki last summer, they called SBA Nordurleid (they have their office in Hafnarfjördur) and I talked to someone, I had to explain which bus and hut I was talking about. So also have the bus plan at hand. Gave the girl, I was talking to my credit card number and left the box at Sterna. When we arrived at Dreki, everything was in place. I can´t remember what they charged. I must admit we were a little bit nervous when we arrived at Dreki.
Have a good trip.
I can understand that you are a bit nervous about this.
